Cerro Coso Community College is offering a number of continuing education classes this fall. These classes don’t award college credit and are available to anyone interested in professional development, skills improvement, cultural enrichment, or recreational enjoyment. Courses are designed to meet the needs of people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests.
Rich Bruce is instructing Recreational Tennis on Saturdays from 8 to 11 a.m. on the College Tennis Course. For a fee of $10, this adult class offers players competitive on-court play and off-court camaraderie. For players 18 and up, the class is for mixed doubles play (a partner is not required to enroll in the course). Don’t forget to bring your racquet and extra tennis balls.
Community Band begins August 27 and ends December 10. Taught by Debra Veit, the class will meet on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Burroughs High School Band Room. Designed to be a performance class for the community, there is a fee of $46 to take the class. Participants will learn how to perform the music assigned as an ensemble, to further the music arts in the community, perform a variety of musical selections from traditional and contemporary band repertoires, and perform in concert.
Amber Peterson is instructing Community Choir on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning August 26. This course will also meet in the Burroughs High School Band Room. For ages 16 and up students will be able to define standard music terminology, sight reading, and beginning to advanced vocal techniques, perform basic to advanced choir repertoires, and perform within a large ensemble. There is a fee of $46 to take the class.
Acting for Teens and Adults will meet on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the College Gymnasium Room 407. Elena Vitale will instruct the course, which is open to anyone age 15 and up. Participants will learn to act on a stage, memorize scripts, build self-confidence, improve communication skills, understand the role of an actor/actress, learn improvisation to develop thinking on your feet, work collectively with others towards a common goal, build professional performance skills and self-confidence, and develop stage presence skills for singers and non-singers. Class begins September 2 and there is a fee of $40 per person.
