Phi Theta Kappa Honors in Action at Cerro Coso Community College is extending a special invitation to the community to participate in a round-table discussion on Contested Histories – The Making and Unmaking of Confederate Monuments on Wednesday, November 15th at 7 pm in the lobby of the Learning Resource Center.
Phi Theta Kappa members have researched the subject to gain a greater perspective on the recent increase in Neo-Nazism and the social conflict over confederate monuments and will present their research joined by guest speakers, Dr. Matt Jones, Professor of History and Political Science, and Associate Professor of History Ben Beshwate.
The Phi Theta Kappa Honors Program, Honors in Action is designed to engage honor students in actions that foster student success. Participation in the program contributes to personal, academic, and career development and affords students the leadership and service-learning opportunities that have an impact on their campus and community. The goal is to create awareness of the importance of seeking out multiple perspectives to augment understanding of a real-world, complex, interdisciplinary topic and improve decision making, demonstrating analytical and critical thinking skills to draw research conclusions, and initiate real-world problem-solving by developing an in-depth, action-oriented solution to make a difference for a challenge related to the an honors study topic.
Community participation, input, and feedback play a vital role in helping them build analytic and collaborative problem-solving and leadership skills necessary and valued in advanced academic pursuits, work places, and communities.
The FREE event is open to the public and includes a catered buffet. Parking is not enforced during public events.
