Seven employers from technology-based firms in the Ridgecrest area mingled with students and faculty in the Cerro Coso Community College Learning Resource Center in the Computer Technology Exploration Club’s second annual “Employer Meet and Greet” on April 3.
The event, designed to give Cerro Coso science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), web professional and business students a chance to interact with industry, is an ongoing project of the College’s Computer Technology Exploration Club (CTEC). “The event is an amazing opportunity for career seekers to forge new connections with local employers who are searching for the best talent to fill their open positions,” said Valerie Karnes, Computer Information Systems and Business Professor and CTEC Advisor.
Students were encouraged to dress for an interview, bring copies of their resumes, and coached on how to interact and network with employers. “Engaging with potential employers is a critical skill for students to learn,” said Karnes. “No matter what stage students are in, it’s never too early to start exploring and making connections and it’s important that this becomes a priority.”
Cerro Coso’s continued commitment to career success for students begins long before graduation. “Students had the chance to learn about different organizations across multiple industries and fields, connect with employer representatives, build their networks, and explore internship and full-time opportunities,” said Karnes. More than 65 students attended and employers said “students this year were better than last year as far as their readiness for employment.”
In preparation for the Meet and Greet, career seekers were encouraged to attend networking and resume writing workshops.
The Computer and Technology Exploration Club is open to all students regardless of location or major. The purpose of the club is to serve as a center for students interested in technology advancement, in learning more about how that technology works, and how they can advance their skills. The club is both an educational and social group.
